Since the Industrial Revolution, humans have been burning fossil fuels, building larger and larger cities, and producing more waste than ever before. With all of these increases, we have also seen an increase in greenhouse gases, or gases that trap energy that would otherwise leave the atmosphere, causing the temperatures at Earth’s surface to heat up. This global warming changes the circulation of the air and ocean currents, sea level height and temperature, and influences extreme weather events. One type of extreme weather event that is altered by climate change is hurricanes. The historic trends of hurricanes are difficult to determine, but with more emissions that lead to global warming, scientists expect to see an increase in the intensity of Atlantic hurricanes.
